Town of Islip
As of right now it is very difficult for sailboats to use pump out facilities in the Town of Islip. This is due to shoal water at pump out docks and discontinuance of the pump out boat operations at least for the rest of the season. The Town of Islip has received funds to upgrade pump out facilities and to purchase pump out boats from the NYC Environmental Facilities Clean Vessel Program. More funds are available. This program uses money from the Marine Fuel Tax to provide localities and private marinas funding to help provide Pump out Stations- Pump out Boats and the maintenance and operation of both. Calls from Southbaysail.com regarding keeping the Islip boat running until the dredging is complete got no response. There was also no response to an email requesting a completion date for making the land based stations accessible. The very first weekend it was in operation the Town of Islip pump out removed more raw sewage from boats than the land based station had in the entire previous season. Why not use this valuable tool which is already paid for? To help keep raw sewage out of the Great South Bay contact Islip Officials here |

The Breach at Old Inlet
I have been watching the Bay die for almost my whole life. As painful as it was to see the damage to friends homes that resulted from Sandy - the simple truth is that closing the breach now will do no good- under the same conditions without the breach the homes would have been flooded.
Sandy has done something that years of work and millions of dollars in public and private spending has not been able to accomplish. The Bay is coming back to life.
The history is that large storms will open breeches in the barrier beach - so if there is another Sandy then there will most likely be another breach. There have been a total of almost twenty. So why put the Great South Bay back in a coma if there is no evidence that it will do any good for homeowners?

Almost all localities in the Northeast offer pump out boat service. There are two reasons
- They have proven to be far more effective at preventing overboard discharge than land based stations- which are often inoperable and in some cases overflowing into the waters they were designed to protect.
- Funding is available thorough the NYS Environmental Facilities Clean Vessel Program. The CVP has actually resorted to paid advertising and tables at boat shows to encourage use of the funds to prevent overboard discharge.
